Bedding

What type of cotton do you use?

All our bedding is made from 100% handpicked, long-staple Egyptian Giza cotton. We are Oeko-texⓇ 100 certified to certify a product without carcinogenic or allergenic substances.

Where is Abate's bedding produced?

In a small, family-run factory in Portugal.

What is the Abate thread count?

We have a thread count (TC) of 430s, which means a thread count of 430 and "single ply". Normally, bedding has a thread count of 100-150.

Single ply means that our threads are woven from nothing but long cotton fibers so you can trust that our high thread count means both finer bedding and better durability. The alternative to "single ply" is "multi ply," where manufacturers spin several weaker threads together into one thick thread, artificially driving up the thread count. If three weaker threads are combined into one, all three are counted without the fabric being finer or stronger than normal cotton for that reason. You can be misled if you only look at thread count. As with everything else, it's the quality of the material that matters, and "single ply" ensures that a high thread count involves a fine fabric.

What type of closure mechanism do you have on duvet covers and pillowcases?

Pillowcases:

Side opening with a flap.

Duvet covers:

Buttons facing inward. It is a stronger design that extends the life of the buttons.

Why do you use buttons instead of a zipper in the duvet cover?

We chose buttons to extend the lifespan of our products. If a zipper gets damaged, the entire zipper must be replaced. This often isn't done, and many beddings are unnecessarily discarded.

Our buttons are placed so closely that losing one still allows the duvet cover to be used. And if a button is lost, we have included extra buttons on the inside of the bedding. This not only ensures a fabric that lasts a long time but also a design that does the same.

What certifications does Abate bedding have?

We are Oeko-Tex® certified according to Standard 100 to ensure that there are minimal or no harmful chemicals in any parts of our products. The certificate is renewed annually for your safety.

We also have a certification from the "Cotton Egypt Association." The organization was established as a collaboration between cotton exporters in Egypt and the Egyptian Ministry of Trade, and their "Gold Seal" ensures that our production is subject to a testing regime that includes DNA testing of products to ensure that we sell genuine Egyptian cotton. This provides you as a customer with the assurance that you are purchasing an authentic product.

Wash & Care

At what temperature should the bedding be washed?

This is a pure natural product that can withstand washing at 60 degrees. If you wash often, it is more gentle for all products to wash at 40 degress.

Read more in our care guide page.

Do you recommend the use of fabric softener?

There is nothing wrong with using fabric softener, but it isn't strictly needed in our bedding. It should be noted that the use of some fabric softeners over time can cause this to accumulate in the fibers so that they are saturated. Over a longer period of time, therefore, the fibers' ability to absorb moisture can be reduced somewhat in all fabrics.

Does your bedding need ironing?

It does not need to be ironed to look good. Dry the bedding in the dryer for 10 minutes after washing and then hang it up to dry.

If you have the extra time, all fabric will be extra nice by ironing or steaming. An additional effect of ironing is that the fibers are pressed down, which means the dirt does not stick as easily.
